STAKEHOLDER DIALOGUE
Stakeholder
Dialogue brings together citizens with elected
and civic leaders in daylong sessions focusing
on finding common ground and new ways forward
on difficult, value laden issues.
These sessions
build on the common ground defined in prior ChoiceDialogues,
which
the citizens participated in, and identify action
steps to move the vision forward. They provide
an unusual opportunity for leaders to work with
ordinary citizens who have already worked hard
to reconcile the complex and emotional tradeoffs
involved in major reform efforts.
In this process
Stakeholder Dialogue can deepen the results of
the ChoiceDialogues and further develop their
implications for action.
Stakeholder Dialogue also models a different
kind of conversation between leaders and ordinary
citizens, one that builds trust and can open
new ways forward that may not be evident. A small
number of successful political leaders have conducted
similar dialogues with constituents in the past
with very positive results, but the model is
not yet well known or well understood, and so
is not easy to replicate.
Stakeholder Dialogue
provides a powerful way for leaders to grasp
and test at a deeper level what the public would
be prepared to support and under what conditions.
It provides a vehicle for trying out leadership
initiatives in that context. It enables leaders
to experiment with and practice new ways
of communicating with citizens and other decision-makers,
test new frameworks and gain confidence in their
use.
